I wish I could be on such a wedding. Most of my weddings go smoothly and rarely anything goes wrong.

Rock and Roll Wedding

I just realised that I did not put any wedding photos online for quite a while and after all it is a wedding photographer’s blog. I will try to catch up. Today you can have a look at a really nice wedding.

Note that the decorations and invitations were designed and made by the bride. If you want some custom made invitations and decorations for your wedding then please get in touch with me so I could pass on your details to her. I believe she would love to arrange something for you.

Bye Bye WPJA

In September I received an invitation to renew my WPJA membership. I decided not to do it. The membership did not bring me anything apart from about a few clicks to my website. Two years ago when I joined them it felt nice that my work was appreciated and that I was accepted as a member. Now it looks like it was a waste of money. I am pretty sure I can find more ways to spend $300.

Wedding Idea

Some people want to have traditional wedding with plenty of guests and huge reception. There are also others who care only about the comitment and they really want it to be their day only. When I got married I told my wife that I will never wear a wedding ring as it only annoys me (I took it off a couple of hours after ceremony as I could not stand it) but I can have a wedding ring tattoo on my finger (at least I wouldn’t lose it). But it never happened. sometime ago I heard about a couple who got married in a very romantic way and the guy went a step further with his wedding tattoo.

“Jim & I met in March of 1999, in 8 months we moved in together and were married on July 29, 2000. We would often go hiking not far from us and this waterfall was always our favorite spot to hike summer through winter so when it came time to get married we thought this would be the perfect place to do it surrounded by friends. Our reception was in our backyard.
As I started getting tattooed more and more Jim thought of having the waterfalls tattooed on his back and this is the end result.”

In my opinion this proof of love is worth much more than any wedding ring. Probably I will do something similar soon.

A news I have read on metro.co.uk today
“Calogero Scimea was hit in the head after one of the rifles – provided by the couple’s parents – went off in front of horrified guests on the special day.

The 45-year-old had been standing in as a favour for the official photographer, who had been taken ill.
The groom’s parents, Mario, 56, and Rita, were being questioned yesterday and could face charges of negligence leading to manslaughter because the incident took place at their house.

The shooting happened just before former teenage sweethearts Valentina Anitra, 22, and Ignazio Licodia, 25, were to set off for their church at Altofonte near Palermo on the Italian island of Sicily.

‘From what we have been able to establish the photographer had asked the parents of the bride and groom if they had any guns to use as props and one went off,’ said police spokesman Col Teo Luzi.

‘The bride and groom were distraught and the wedding was cancelled.’ The hunting rifle was legally held. Guns are often fired during family events in Sicily.”

No comments from me on this one.

Marriage and Friendship.

There was five of us – friends from the neighbourhood. Some time ago last one of us got married and one guy did not show up at the wedding. We laughed that his wife did not let him as he is a bit under her shoe. We sent him a photo from the wedding with all of us. As a response we received a text message from his wife! Something like this: “Please do not send us photos because I don’t want it. Look into the future like us. Don’t look back”. That was a huge shock to all of us. Poor lad. His wife did one of the worst things she could. She cut him off from his real friends (we knew each other for over 25 years). That is a disaster. He stepped into a real shit and we do feel sorry for him. I just hope he doesn’t snap at some point. I would be single if my wife wanted me to choose between friends and her and that is the only advice I can give: if you see it comming then runaway. There is a huge difference between commitment for life and screwing your life up.

Top Gear Photos

Accidentally I found two CF cards containing photos from filming one of the episodes of Top Gear. It was filmed in Germany and seems to be an interesting one. I do not watch TV but I will have to watch this episode on iPlayer when it becomes available. Unfortunately no photo that would reveal The Stig’s identity. Of course I did not keep the cards but gave them back and actually I was dissapointed with some people who heard the story and said that they would not return them. After all one card costs about 80 quid. Funk them, I would consider it a theft and I am not a thief. I will not publish the photos and I will not tell what will be in the episode. See it yourselves.

Experiment

A few weeks ago I had a chance to do an experiment. I left all my fancy professional equipment and took with me only Olympus PEN E-P1 which I could easily hide in my jacket’s pocket. One 17mm lens only. No flash. Thanks to it I had no heavy backpack to carry and I could try to blend in. I arrived to the church long before the couple and had a look around. The guests started arriving and I had a chance to have a few words with them.

So far nobody knew I am a photographer. One of the guests came with a digital SLR and looked much more pro than I did (sic!). Then there was waiting for the bride to come as they got stuck in London traffic. I took some photos, had a chat with guests and the bride arrived and the ceremony started.

The hard part was the lighting and moments when I wanted to do close ups. I did not have a zoom so I had to come closer to the action (I was reasonable enough so I did not disturb anyone during the ceremony). Without a zoom lens I was unable to make a really close portraits. With strong light coming through the windows it was also pretty hard to find a good position to make a proper photo. Signing the register was also accompanied by a backlight.

After the ceremony we went to the reception venue. What I found out was that the couple will sit with their back against a big window which again makes it very difficult to get a good shot without a flash. Then there was a dinner and still nobody realised that I went there only to take photos. During a chat one person asked me if I work with the groom from. As I cannot lie I had to tell te truth that I am a photographer. Then at the end of the wedding another person asked how I met the couple and again they were surprised to hear that I am only taking pictures.

What I learned from the experiment is that professional equipment makes photographer’s life easier as having right tools gives expected results. Photographer with a pro equipment sticks out like a sore thumb though. Having a small camera allowed me to blend in and join the party. This way I could show the “insider’s view” of the day without people posing and aware that they are being photographed. When people do not see a huge lens attached to a big camera body they act more natural and it helps with showing their real emotions. I really enjoyed the day and would be happy to do it again. Anyone interested?
